carbonite is an audio-visual particle study by studio blekksprut1 (NO), exploring the accumulation of CO₂ in the atmosphere and the need for carbon capture, removal and storage.
carbonite translates global emissions pathways and industrial capture capabilities into a shifting field of particles. Their number and accumulation reveal the tension between the scale of what we release and our capacity to capture it. The atmosphere becomes a space in which the consequences of our actions gather, making visible what otherwise remains unseen.
Presented in a forest, the work places an industrial challenge within a living landscape. The surrounding trees offer a counterpoint to the simulated atmosphere, connecting the movement of particles to the cycles of carbon, growth and renewal.
carbonite is an inquiry into the distance between climate ambition and action. What happens when our targets remain promises, while emissions continue to accumulate? The title evokes an imagined state of suspended life—a future held still by the carbon legacy of its past.
carbonite challenges both the individual and the collective to consider the atmosphere we are creating, urging the audience to reflect:
“If we fail to meet our climate goals and CO₂ continues to accumulate, will life turn into carbonite?”
carbonite refers to UN Sustainable Development Goal #13: Climate Action.
